Chef Enrique Olvera and Casamata hospitality group will debut a vibrant, new taqueria in Williamsburg, Brooklyn called Esse Taco this spring. It’s the latest addition to a family of acclaimed contemporary Mexican restaurants ranging from bicoastal ATLA to World’s 50 Best honorees Pujol and Cosme.
The opening brings Casamata’s Mexican authenticity and originality to Bedford Avenue with an experience that captures the essence of Mexico’s most democratic, convivial dining traditions. Guests eat over large barrels in the bright, colorful space, where fresh masa, nixtamalized and made daily in-house from heirloom varieties of corn, is pressed by hand into tortillas.
The simplicity of the menu allows the best possible ingredients to shine. Tacos feature classic fillings such as ribeye steak, citrus-marinated grilled chicken thigh and al pastor pork loin, but eschew the typical chopped presentation in favor of a single cut of meat that puts the quality front and center. It's a distinct style that feels right at home among the menu's playful nods to Casamata favorites, like the ever-present pineapple butter that first debuted at Pujol, then Cosme, and a dessert inspired by Cosme's iconic corn husk meringue. Tequila and mezcal margaritas, beer and micheladas, refreshing agua frescas and bracing, fizzy sueros form the beverage lineup.
With this taqueria, Casamata intends to create a space where everyone is welcome. Where good tacos, good music and good company can be enjoyed from the afternoon to late at night.
