As a recent college graduate I have culminated a rather unique background of skills that allow me to thrive in all environments. From my degree background of finance, I have an acumen for precision and attention to detail that become extremely valuable in a high-intensity work environment. My work with acting and filmmaking have given me an appreciation for quality and presentation. In addition, I have taken a very helpful course in college “Wine Tasting and Management” that gave me a wealth of knowledge on wine that most do not posses. These attributes are present in all manners of my life but became extremely important the past year while working within the service industry. Coupled with my charming personality and social skills, working as a food runner and later a server, helped me connect with guests more easily as to make their time at the restaurant as enjoyable as possible. While also keeping an open mind and having emotional intelligence I am able to navigate situations with ease. Furthermore, while being able to handle tasks by myself I love working in a team environment and this became apparent when working at Barcocina. Barcocina, a modern take on Mexican cuisine, was my first experience working for a restaurant and from the start it was thrilling. As a food runner I was able to learn the significance of communicating with all front and back of house employees to ensure a smooth and memorable experience for the guests. In addition, the importance of multi-tasking was made apparent and I was able to really fine-tune this skill so that I could be the most efficient employee possible. Being a food runner was tremendously helpful in getting acclimated to the service industry as I was able to witness first hand the intricacies to each position that allow for proper service during the most high-volume times. I was later able to hone my skills in the service industry as a server for Levy Restaurants through their Oak Street Beach branch. It was here that I was given a daily test of high-volume service while also expanding my ability to handle 8 tables at one time. On occasion the beach-front restaurant would host large parties of 250 plus people that gave me the opportunity to learn how to coordinate service at such a party. These duties included understanding when to refresh buffet trays for guest, keeping in contact with the party host to assure satisfaction and learning to be flexible in order to adapt to any role from a service standpoint as to facilitate a smooth and entertaining event. During the summer months of Oak Street Beach service, I was able to improve my abilities to greet all guests that passed my direction, learn to up-sell items that seemed appropriate for the guest, and to keep guests comfortable in their dining experience by having a great knowledge of the menu as to answer any and all questions they incurred.
While I would think my time in the service industry is brief, I would argue that my ability to learn quickly paired with a good work ethic make up for this one shortcoming. With the season for the beach restaurant coming to an end I would like to continue my career within the service industry as it has proven to be a good fit.
