About Us

Sutro Hall will be a neighborhood restaurant rooted in San Francisco - an everyday gathering place where great food, genuine hospitality, and memorable celebrations come together. Our goal is to become the kind of place guests return to week after week: equally suited for a casual dinner at the bar, a milestone celebration, or a memorable evening with friends.

We're building a team that believes hospitality is personal. Every interaction should feel warm, thoughtful, and effortless, creating experiences that are both polished and approachable.

Overview

The General Manager (GM) will lead the opening and ongoing operations of the new restaurant, working closely with ownership and the Executive Chef to bring the restaurant's vision to life. The GM is responsible for the overall performance of the business, including team leadership, guest experience, financial results, daily operations, and private events.

As the leader of the opening management team, the GM will establish the standards, systems, and culture that define the restaurant for years to come. This is a highly visible, hands-on role for someone who can balance thoughtful hospitality with strong business judgment and build a neighborhood restaurant guests and team members are proud to call their own.

What You'll Do
  • Lead the restaurant opening, including operational planning, hiring, onboarding, training, systems setup, and opening-readiness execution.
  • Translate the restaurant's vision into clear service standards, operating practices, and a strong, consistent team culture.
  • Oversee all day-to-day restaurant operations, including service, staffing, guest experience, facilities, safety, and administrative responsibilities.
  • Recruit, lead, coach, and develop the management and front-of-house teams, creating clear expectations, accountability, and opportunities for growth.
  • Partner closely with the Executive Chef to align front- and back-of-house operations, menu execution, staffing, purchasing, and the overall guest experience.
  • Own the restaurant's financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, labor management, purchasing, cost controls, revenue, and overall P&L results.
  • Review financial and operating reports, identify opportunities, and turn insights into practical action.
  • Drive sales by building regular business, supporting marketing and community relationships, and identifying opportunities to grow restaurant and private event revenue.
  • Partner with the Event Manager to oversee the full private events process, from lead management and sales through BEO planning, staffing, execution, and follow-up.
  • Ensure exceptional guest experiences by maintaining a visible floor presence, building relationships with regulars, and resolving concerns with warmth and sound judgment.
  • Establish and maintain strong systems for scheduling, payroll support, cash handling, inventory, ordering, reservations, and manager communication.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organization, food safety, workplace safety, and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with ownership, providing timely updates on performance, staffing, operational needs, and priorities.
  • Lead by example, stepping in wherever needed to support the team and deliver a polished, approachable guest experience.
Who You Are
  • You are a warm, grounded, and highly visible leader who genuinely enjoys being on the floor with guests and the team.
  • You lead from the front while giving managers the clarity, trust, and coaching they need to succeed.
  • You combine strong hospitality instincts with financial discipline and understand that a healthy culture and a healthy business support one another.
  • You communicate directly and thoughtfully, hold high standards with kindness, and follow through on commitments.
  • You remain calm under pressure, make sound decisions, and bring structure to complex or fast-moving situations.
  • You have an exceptional eye for detail without losing sight of the larger goals of the restaurant.
  • You are collaborative and know how to build productive relationships with culinary leaders, ownership, vendors, and community partners.
  • You are energized by the opportunity to open a restaurant and shape its culture, systems, and reputation from the very beginning.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive restaurant management experience, including senior leadership in an upscale, high-volume, full-service environment; opening experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading managers and building, training, coaching, and retaining high-performing hospitality teams.
  • Strong understanding of restaurant financials, including budgeting, forecasting, labor, cost of goods, revenue management, and P&L performance.
  • Proven ability to develop operating systems, uphold service standards, and manage multiple priorities with consistency.
  • Strong knowledge of food, wine, beverage, and elevated service standards.
  • Experience supporting private event sales, planning, and execution.
  • Working knowledge of California and San Francisco employment, food safety, and restaurant compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with POS systems, reservation platforms, scheduling and payroll software, inventory tools, and Google Workspace.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Work Environment
  • Involves standing and walking throughout the entire shift.
  • Involves frequent reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
  • Involves lifting, moving, and carrying up to 25-50 pounds as needed.
  • Requires the ability to work in a fast-paced restaurant environment.

Bonus Eligibility: Eligible for performance-based bonus and potential participation in a long-term incentive program.

Benefits
  • Medical, Dental, & Vision Insurance
  • Paid Time Off
  • Commuter Benefits
  • Dining Discounts

About Sutro Hall
Sutro Hall is a love letter to San Francisco, built around a simple idea: dinner should feel like a night out.
The food is thoughtful, satisfying, and easy to love. The drinks are precise without being fussy. The room is polished but relaxed, lively without feeling chaotic, and designed to make an ordinary evening feel like something more.
Hospitality is warm, generous, and personal, with the small details doing the heavy lifting. A cold martini, a great meal, a little surprise, and a room full of energy.
Sutro Hall is a place for long dinners, drinks at the bar, celebrations, spontaneous nights out, and the kind of evening you want to do again.
