Sommelier – Opening Team
Indienne New York | Spring Opening
Chef Sujan Sarkar is bringing his Michelin-starred tasting menu concept, Indienne Chicago, to New York City this spring. We are assembling a focused, driven opening team of front-of-house professionals to help bring this vision to life.
The Sommelier role at Indienne New York is a hands-on service position that works closely with management as well as both FOH and BOH teams. This role is responsible for curating and maintaining a wine program aligned with the restaurant’s goals, while ensuring that wine and beverage service is executed to the highest standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain and evolve a wine list that reflects the philosophy and direction of the restaurant
- Execute precise and thoughtful wine and beverage service
- Partner with the General Manager to train and educate service staff on the wine program
- Keep the team informed of updates and changes to the beverage list
- Assist with inventory management, including receiving deliveries, verifying invoices, and organizing the beverage storeroom
- Support daily operational needs, including movement of wine and spirits across service areas
The Sommelier coordinates with the General Manager to conduct training of wait staff and keeps them up to date of all changes to the wine list. The Sommelier may be asked to perform routine tasks of maintaining the beverage storeroom, verify invoices upon delivery, and move bottles or cases of wine and spirit to facilitate service through our zones of operation

Our opening team will be small and hands-on, with high standards across the board. The aim is to create a restaurant that earns its place among New York City’s top dining destinations through the quality of the work we do every day.

Essential Duties:
Wine List
- Maintains a beverage list that meets the goals set by management and ownership
- Maintains physical beverage menus for the bar and restaurant floor
- Maximize profit by maintaining profit margins, sales mix, portion control
- Maintains awareness of inventory counts, product shorts, and pivot points for service in coordination with the General Manager
- Keeps list up to date with wine trends
Staff Training
- Trains staff to maximize revenue through mentorship in product knowledge and Indienne NYC service standards
- Conducts/Attends routine training to ensure the staff knows pronunciations, origin, and grape variety of each wine on the list
- Train staff on wine knowledge and wine and food pairing
- Ensures staff is up to date on all additions and deletions from the list
- Communicate dining room staff and bar staff
Inventory and storage maintenance
- Maintain organized and clean beverage storeroom
- Ensure that all alcoholic beverage deliveries are checked in
- Verify all alcoholic beverage invoices as needed
- Ensure all alcoholic beverage are put in proper bins promptly
- Order all alcoholic beverages, except beer
- Conduct a regular inventory of all alcoholic beverages in coordination with Bar Staff and Beverage Director
- Ensure that all security controls are adhered to
- Make changes to wines in POS system as necessary
- Maintain POS perpetual inventory
Service
- Sales and Service of Food and Beverage with a primary and principal focus on Wine Selections for Indienne NYC
- Interact with guests and serve customers as required and make recommendations
- Assist wait staff with wine service when appropriate
- Ensure that bar staff serves beverages properly
- Monitors wine service and trains according to service manual
- Other tasks as assigned related to sales and service in the Indienne NYC Dining room
Competencies & Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a fine dining environment, preferably in a similar role (1-3 years)
- Outstanding knowledge of wines
- Extensive knowledge of menu items in keeping with Standards of
- Actively practice food safety procedures
- Positive and clear written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work well in a team environment
- Ability to engage guests successfully and build a relationship
- Impeccable grooming as defined by management and dress code
The physical demands for this position are seeing, hearing, speaking, reaching, frequently lifting up to 25 pounds, occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds, sitting, standing, for 4 to 8 hours, bending, and moving intermittently during working hours.
