Penny is a 31-seat restaurant in New York East Village, opened spring 2024. Located directly above owners' Chase Sinzer and Joshua Pinsky’s Claud, Penny consists entirely of bar and counter seating and serves a menu of locally-sourced seafood prepared in all forms. We are a small restaurant with a rigorous wine program, and are seeking a confident and experienced sommelier. Our cellar
consists of an extensive selection of wine of all styles from around the world, represented on a list currently exceeding 2,300 references. An ideal candidate:
- Possesses strong knowledge of all major wine regions (emphasis on France) and comfortability
with vintage depth.
- Has a palate well-attuned to detecting wine flaws and can confidently judge the condition of aged wines.
- Has a working understanding of viticulture, farming practices, & winemaking conventions.
- Is curious, open-minded, and ever eager to learn more.
- Is seeking out a fast-paced, focused environment and a small team dynamic.
- Is looking towards proper wine service and can translate these details to a casual setting.
- Is passionate about sharing their knowledge with others and creating memorable and
relaxed guest experiences.
- Is excited to educate all staff members on wine and other beverages, and to coach our standards
of wine service.
- Is deeply organized, loves spreadsheets, and is an emphatic over-communicator in and out of service.
- Can reach, bend, stoop, and frequently lift up to 50lbs (and loves breaking down cardboard boxes).
