Position Overview
The Sommelier at The Twenty Two New York is responsible for curating and delivering an exceptional wine program that enhances the overall guest experience. This role combines expert wine knowledge, exceptional service, and leadership within beverage operations. The Sommelier works closely with the Beverage Director and management team to maintain high standards, provide team training, and ensure guests receive personalized and memorable wine experiences.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborates with the Beverage Director to develop, maintain, and evolve the wine program in alignment with menu offerings
- Provides expert wine service and guidance to guests, ensuring hospitality, education, and personalized recommendations
- Assists guests with wine selections, pairings, and menu guidance; answers questions regarding preparation or ingredients
- Oversees operational aspects of the wine program, including inventory, stock control, and budget adherence
- Supports training and development of team members on wine knowledge, service protocols, and operational standards
- Maintains thorough knowledge of menu items, wine list, specials, and recommended pairings.
- Participates in pre-shift meetings, tastings, and team training sessions as the voice of the wine program
- Handles guest inquiries, requests, and concerns professionally, escalating to management when necessary
- Supports all aspects of service as needed to ensure exceptional guest experiences
- Maintains bar and wine service equipment and workspaces; reports maintenance or safety concerns promptly
- Ensures compliance with all Department of Health, sanitation, safety, and responsible alcohol service regulations
- Attends required staff and leadership meetings
- Adheres to posted schedules, attendance, and punctuality standards
- Performs additional duties as assigned by management
Qualifications
- Minimum of 1 year of experience as a sommelier in an upscale or high-volume hospitality environment
- Strong knowledge of wine, wine service, and culinary terminology
- Fluency in spoken and written English
- High school diploma or GED required
- TIPS or responsible alcohol service certification required within 60 days of hire
- Proficiency with restaurant POS systems and basic computer applications
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to remain calm and effective in a fast-paced environment
- Polished personal appearance consistent with The Twenty Two’s standards
- Passion for hospitality, wine, and guest service excellence
Essential Functions and Physical Demands
- This position requires the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation
- Standing and remaining active for up to 12 hours per shift
- Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Frequently walking, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and kneeling
- Frequently using stairs, often while carrying items
- Occasionally crouching and climbing
- Safely working around hot surfaces, sharp objects, wet floors, and temperature fluctuations (from hot kitchens to freezers)
- Exposure to common allergens and specialty ingredients

Compensation: Hourly ($18.00) plus tips
