Concept: Busy American restaurant with events, collaborations, and special projects

Overview

We are seeking an experienced, motivated Sous Chef to join our team at a high-volume American restaurant located in the heart of Rockefeller Center. This role is ideal for a chef who thrives in a fast-paced environment, values consistency and standards, and is excited by events, collaborations, and special culinary projects beyond daily service.

The Sous Chef will work closely with the Executive Chef and leadership team to support day-to-day operations while also contributing to menu development, team mentorship, and special initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Executive Chef in all kitchen operations, including service, prep, and events

  • Uphold all health department regulations, food safety standards, and cleanliness protocols

  • Maintain consistent execution of recipes, plating, and quality standards

  • Lead by example during service in a high-volume environment

  • Mentor, train, and support BOH team members to foster growth and accountability

  • Assist in developing new menu items, specials, and event-specific offerings

  • Help execute off-site events, pop-ups, collaborations, and special projects

  • Monitor prep levels, waste, and organization to ensure efficient service

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with FOH and management

  • Step into leadership roles as needed to ensure smooth operations

Qualifications
  • Prior experience as a Sous Chef or strong Senior Line Cook ready to step up

  • Experience in busy, service-driven restaurants

  • Strong understanding of American cuisine and seasonal ingredients

  • Proven ability to lead and mentor a team

  • Solid organizational and time-management skills

  • Calm, solutions-oriented mindset under pressure

  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays, and event-driven schedules


Compensation Details

Compensation: Salary ($65,000.00 - $80,000.00)

Chef Greg Baxtrom, known for his acclaimed Brooklyn restaurants Olmsted, Maison Yaki, and Patti Ann’s, opened 5 Acres in Midtown Manhattan in Fall 2022. Located in the heart of New York’s iconic Rockefeller Center, 5 Acres brings Baxtrom’s approach to American food with a Midwestern perspective to Manhattan.

The restaurant reflects Greg’s deeply personal connection to the land and his Midwestern roots. Every element of 5 Acres — from the intimate private dining room built with wood from his family’s farm to the airy dining room filled with vibrant greenery and natural textures — draws inspiration from the five-acre farm outside of Chicago where Greg grew up.

Since opening in November 2022, 5 Acres has served breakfast, lunch, and dinner, while also hosting private events and gatherings in its dedicated private dining space.
