Job Details
As a Chef, you will be responsible for overseeing the culinary operations in a professional kitchen. Your expertise, creativity, and leadership will contribute to the creation and execution of exceptional dishes, ensuring an outstanding dining experience for guests. You will supervise kitchen staff, manage food preparation processes, develop menus, and maintain high standards of food quality, safety, and hygiene.
 
Key Responsibilities:
1. Food Preparation and Cooking: Prepare and cook a variety of dishes using various cooking techniques, ensuring exceptional taste, presentation, and quality. Ensure that all food items are prepared according to standardized recipes, portion sizes, and food safety guidelines.
 
2. Culinary Leadership: Provide guidance and supervision to kitchen staff, including sous chefs, line cooks, and kitchen assistants. Train and mentor staff members, fostering a positive and productive work environment. Lead by example and maintain high culinary standards throughout all food preparation processes.
 
3. Quality Control: Oversee all aspects of food quality, including taste, appearance, and consistency. Conduct regular inspections of food stations, monitor portion sizes, and ensure adherence to established recipes and plating standards. Address any quality issues promptly and implement corrective actions.
 
4. Inventory and Cost Management: Monitor inventory levels and assist in the ordering and purchasing of ingredients and supplies. Minimize waste through effective portion control, proper storage practices, and creative utilization of surplus ingredients. Work closely with the management team to optimize cost efficiency without compromising quality.
 
5. Food Safety and Sanitation: Ensure compliance with all food safety regulations and sanitation standards. Train and educate kitchen staff on safe food handling practices, hygiene protocols, and cleanliness routines. Maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment, regularly inspecting equipment for functionality and safety.
 
6. Collaboration and Communication: Foster open and effective communication within the kitchen team and with other departments. Collaborate with front-of-house staff, including servers and managers, to ensure smooth service and address any customer concerns or special requests.
 
7. Culinary Creativity: Continuously explore new flavors, techniques, and presentation styles to enhance the culinary offerings. Experiment with seasonal ingredients, create daily specials, and introduce unique dishes that showcase your culinary expertise and the restaurant's identity.
 
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Proven experience as a Chef in a professional kitchen environment.
- Culinary degree or relevant certification is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of various cooking techniques, culinary trends, and international cuisines.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills.
- Solid understanding of food safety regulations and sanitation practices.
- Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional creativity and a passion for culinary arts.

Welcome to Katella Bakery, Deli and Restaurant, a landmark institution in Los Alamitos for over 50 years. Started by our parents, Sam and Shirley, who came to America from Eastern Europe in search of a better life. We continue their tradition of authentic family style meals and fresh baked rye, challah, cakes and pastries. All of our items are prepared in house including our corned beef and pastrami. Today, Sam’s initial recipes live on in the hands and hearts of our expert bakers. A portion of the original mother dough still starts each and every loaf we bake. Many of our traditional meals are Shirley’s original recipes; Matzo Ball Soup,Potato Latkes, Sweet and Sour Cabbage, and Chicken Soup. Whether you are here for one of our signature meals, or for the best Pastrami Sandwich around, you can be assured that quality, care, and great taste are in every bite.
