Shef connects vetted independent chefs with weekly subscribers looking for fresh local meal delivery. We are quickly expanding our weekly meal subscription and in need of a culinary expert to vet new applicants and their proposed menus. If you love working with chefs, building menus, and talking food this role might be a great fit!

About the Role

Shef is hiring a culinary contractor to support our culinary team in growing our supply across 8 markets. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in costing, sourcing, and high-volume production at a fine dining level, as well as a working knowledge of Mediterranean, Italian, and New American cuisines. Familiarity or curiosity about additional cuisines is a plus.

This position is best suited to someone who enjoys mentoring chefs across all skill levels and backgrounds. You’ll play a critical role in supporting our onboarding and culinary evaluation processes—helping ensure that every dish on the Shef platform meets our standards for taste, consistency, and quality.

Key Responsibilities (approx. 25hrs/week)
  • Review culinary applicants and assess dishes submitted for tasting.
  • Collaborate with onboarding agents to guide chef applicants through the approval process.
  • Review and interpret tasting feedback from our local taste testers.
  • Communicate with tasters for additional insight or clarification when needed.
  • Workshop approved chefs’ menus and document debrief notes for internal review.
Requirements
  • Fluency in menu planning, production optimization, costing and sourcing.
  • Understanding of Shef’s culinary model—particularly which dishes and ingredients hold, travel, and reheat well.
  • Interest in coaching and mentoring chefs
  • At least 4 years of professional experience in a fine dining setting.
  • Availability to take calls between 12–6 PM EST / 9AM –3 PM PST.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to set your own schedule.
  • This role is entirely remote. Must have a laptop and reliable internet connection.
  • Proficiency with Google Meets, Google Sheets; familiarity with Calendly and Slack, Airtable a plus.
  • Attention to detail, follow-through, and a “no task is too small” mindset.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with shifting priorities.
  • Culinary degree preferred.
