Job Details

Kiln is a two-star Michelin tasting menu restaurant in San Francisco, and we are currently seeking a part-time Backwaiter to join our Service Team. This position requires holiday and weekend availability, with the occasional on-call shift, and typically offers 2–3 shifts per week. While this is a part-time role, there is opportunity for growth and the potential to move into a full-time position down the road.


The Backwaiter plays an integral role in ensuring that service runs seamlessly from start to finish. Each evening begins with setting up the restaurant for service, with an emphasis on maintaining cleanliness, organization, and readiness across all spaces—from common areas and service stations to guest-facing areas of the restaurant. During service, the role centers on supporting the flow of the dining room by coordinating with other service team members and assisting with table maintenance. Backwaiters are also responsible for closing the restaurant in accordance with company standards and ensuring the space is reset for the following day.


This position offers a holistic introduction to fine-dining service at a high level. Candidates should be communicative, detail-oriented, composed, and collaborative, capable of critical thinking and multitasking in a fast-paced, high-standard environment. A sense of trustworthiness, honesty, and ambition is key, along with the ability to maintain grace under pressure and genuine hospitality in all guest interactions.


All service staff are required to know the entire menu, including food presentations and details on the preparation of the menu (verbiage), and are expected to approach this as an opportunity to learn and grow within a passionate, tight-knit team.


Fine dining experience and wine knowledge are encouraged, though not required; we will happily train the right candidate and provide the tools for success.


Schedule:
 Fridays & Saturdays (and Tuesday - Thursday as needed), with Sundays and Mondays off, plus annual closures.
Compensation: Pay begins at $25/hour, with additional pooled tips distributed among eligible staff members.
