Spoke & Bird is a WBE-owned, locally focused café, bakery, and sandwich deli. We build our menus around seasonal ingredients from regional farmers and vendors, and we make pretty much everything in-house. Small team, high standards, no drama.
We’re looking to add a solid human to our Pilsen & South Loop kitchens—someone who can hold their own on the line, prep with intention, and build sandwiches that make people quietly nod in approval.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Follow standardized recipes, portion guidelines, and prep lists precisely
- Execute all menu items accurately, efficiently, and consistently during service
- Assist in the daily preparation of baked goods and retail food items
- Oversees their designated station and holds responsibility for all items produced
- Collaborate with BOH staff to ensure food quality and standards are met
- Communicate effectively with FOH team members to ensure timely and accurate service flow
- Taking initiative to assist in various kitchen areas as necessary or when the need arises
- Uphold standards of cleanliness and operation of all equipment as set by management, as well as reporting any equipment malfunctions to management
- Prioritize standards when using product following FIFO
- Complies with and has good knowledge of all health department requirements of food safety and hygiene - including, but not limited to labeling, time and temperature
- Rinse, wash, sanitize, dry and put away all dishes and utensils
- Perform daily and weekly cleaning tasks as assigned in the kitchen cleaning schedule
- Working both independently and as part of a tight-knit team
- Keeping a clean, organized station throughout service (this is an open kitchen—people can see you, and yes, it matters)
- Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with guests and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor/manager
What We’re Looking For

At least 2 years of kitchen experience

Strong work ethic, good instincts, and a sense of teamwork

Attention to detail (recipes, cleanliness, timing—all of it)
- Solid understanding of cooking fundamentals, knife handling, and kitchen operations
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately
- Strong time management and multitasking skills.
- Capable of lifting up to 40 lbs and standing for extended periods
- Weekend availability (non-negotiable)
- AM and/or PM availability
- Someone who takes food seriously but doesn’t take themselves too seriously
