Masseria is a celebration of the big, harmonious Italian flavors that shaped Chef Nicholas Stefanelli’s palate as a child. The name itself is a heartfelt tribute to the sun-dappled, walled agricultural estates that dot the Puglia region where his heritage is rooted, and the honest coastal cuisine of the breadbasket of Italy. Capturing the warm welcome of the Masseria, Stefanelli's first restaurant embodies the austere beauty of a simple Italian farmstead, the industrial grit of its Union Market neighborhood, and the irrepressible chic of its fashion-savvy chef-owner.

Position Summary

As Mixologist at Masseria, you will lead the development and execution of a cocktail program that harmonizes with our Italian heritage and innovative culinary approach. You will have the opportunity to craft cocktails that tell a story — rooted in Italian tradition, enhanced by seasonality, and delivered with modern finesse. This role is perfect for someone who understands fine dining culture, is deeply knowledgeable about spirits and ingredients, and thrives on creativity and precision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and evolve a seasonal cocktail menu inspired by Italian ingredients, flavors, and traditions.
  • Prepare and present cocktails to Michelin standards — consistent, beautiful, and thoughtful.
  • Collaborate with the culinary and wine teams to develop pairings and complement tasting menu experiences.
  • Engage guests with warmth and knowledge, guiding them through the cocktail offerings.
  • Maintain the bar’s mise en place, inventory, cleanliness, and compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Train and mentor support staff on cocktail techniques, recipes, and service standards.
  • Monitor beverage costs, stock levels, and ordering, in partnership with management.
  • Stay informed on global cocktail trends while maintaining respect for Masseria’s culinary identity.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Mixologist or Lead Bartender in a fine dining or Michelin-starred setting.
  • Strong foundation in Italian spirits, amari, vermouths, and cocktail culture.
  • Exceptional knowledge of mixology, bar tools, and techniques (classic and contemporary).
  • Ability to engage with guests in a refined yet approachable manner.
  • High level of professionalism, attention to detail, and teamwork.
  • Familiarity with sustainable and seasonal ingredients preferred.
  • TIPS or ServSafe Alcohol Certification preferred.

Compensation Details

Entering into a handsome courtyard with relaxed seating, Masseria, an exclusive restaurant for 60 guests, combines the raw and simple look of an Italian country estate, the industrial grit of the Union Market district, and the undeniable chic of its fashion-savvy chef-owner.

Stefanelli’s innovative Italian tasting menus sing with touches of coastal cultures and feature a satisfying range of his signature cuisine. Fresh hand-crafted La Paste along with freshly prepared Pesce and inventive Carne dishes comprise the rustic yet refined progression of courses. Washington Post food critic, Tom Sietsema, selected Masseria as third among his top 10 favorite restaurants in Washington, DC for 2015. Washingtonian Magazine selected Masseria to the #12 spot in its list of the city’s Top 100 Very Best Restaurants for 2016. The Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington nominated Masseria in category of “New Restaurant of the Year” and “Pastry Chef of the Year” for 2016.
