Role: Floor Sommelier
Location: New York City (One Fifth)
Reports to: Wine Director, General Manager, Assistant General Manager and Floor Manager
Position Summary
The Floor Sommelier is a guest-facing role at Golden Steer NYC, ensuring every table experiences world-class wine service as part of the timeless steakhouse tradition. You’ll work the dining room floor—not behind a desk—guiding guests through our wine program, assisting with service, and supporting the team with all floor duties. With deep wine knowledge, polished hospitality, and a collaborative spirit, you’ll elevate the guest experience while contributing to smooth service across the room.
Key Responsibilities
- Guest Wine Guidance: Recommend and pair wines to enhance the dining experience, balancing guest preferences with menu highlights.
- Tableside Service: Present, open, and pour wines with precision, elegance, and consistency.
- Guest Engagement: Educate guests on wine selections, vintages, and pairings in a polished but approachable style.
- Team Collaboration: Support servers, bartenders, and managers by assisting with service duties beyond wine, including food running and guest care.
- Service Excellence: Uphold Golden Steer’s standards in pacing, timing, and polished hospitality.
- Salesmanship & Personality: Use expertise and confidence to upsell wine and beverage selections, enhancing both guest experience and revenue.
- Cellar & Inventory Support: Assist in maintaining par levels, organizing storage, and ensuring wines are service-ready.
- Cleanliness & Organization: Maintain polished glassware, tools, and work areas; follow sanitation protocols at all times.

Experience & Qualifications (Must-Haves)
- 2+ years of sommelier or advanced wine service experience in an upscale, high-volume restaurant.
- WSET Level 2+, Court of Master Sommeliers certification, or equivalent professional training preferred.
- Strong knowledge of wine regions, vintages, and pairings; spirits and cocktail knowledge a plus.
- Polished tableside demeanor and ability to communicate with both casual and expert wine drinkers.
- Team-oriented approach—willing to assist in non-wine duties to ensure smooth service.
- English required; Spanish a plus.
Operations & Compliance
- Uphold NYC DOH sanitation standards and execute responsible alcohol service at all times.
- Follow allergy and cross-contact protocols with care.
Teamwork & Culture
- Be guest-focused, approachable, and present on the floor at all times.
- Collaborate with servers and managers to deliver seamless service.
- Represent Golden Steer with professionalism, humility, and pride.
Physical & Scheduling Requirements
- Stand and move swiftly for 8–10 hours.
- Lift and carry wine cases (up to 40 lbs).
- Nights, weekends, and holidays required.
Compensation & Benefits
Hourly rate plus tips, benefits, and opportunities for growth within a chef-driven, classic steakhouse culture. Final compensation commensurate with experience.
