Makina Cafe is an established woman-owned Ethiopian-Eritrean Hospitality Company with a food truck, a catering kitchen, and a food stall on Governors Island. In the spring of 2025 Makina will be opening its first full-service brick and mortar location in Sunnyside/Long Island City, and the first Ethiopian-Eritrean restaurant in the famously diverse borough of Queens. Makina Café’s mission is to serve delicious East African food without fear of putting a spin on this time-honored cuisine, and to educate their public about the history and culture behind this revered, long-standing culinary tradition in a welcoming, hospitable environment.

We are looking for a hardworking and reliable Kitchen Porter to be the backbone of our kitchen team. This is a crucial entry-level position for anyone with a strong work ethic who wants to start a career in the restaurant industry. The Kitchen Porter will be responsible for maintaining cleanliness and organization, ensuring the kitchen runs smoothly and efficiently.

Responsibilities:

Wash and sanitize all dishes, utensils, pots, and pans, including those used for our traditional stews and injera.
Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, equipment, floors, and walls to uphold health and safety standards.
Assist with receiving and properly storing food and supply deliveries, rotating stock as needed.
Remove kitchen waste and properly dispose of trash and recycling.
Support the prep cooks and chefs with basic tasks like peeling vegetables or fetching ingredients.
Maintain the cleanliness and organization of storage areas, refrigerators, and freezers.
Assist with the regular deep cleaning of the kitchen and all equipment.

Qualifications:

Prior experience in a kitchen or food service environment is a plus, but not required. We will train the right candidate.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while remaining calm and focused.
Physical stamina and the ability to stand for long periods and lift heavy items (up to 50 lbs).
Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to follow instructions precisely.
A positive attitude and a proactive approach to maintaining cleanliness.
Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
