India’s Tradition of Fried Chicken.
Every culture has a long history of frying the bird. So does India!
All across the Indian subcontinent there are various types of fried chicken that has existed for centuries, but the rest of the world has not fully understood its glory. From Chicken Pakoras in the North to Chili Chicken in the East to Chicken 65 in the South — the options and spices are endless. Rowdy Rooster is plucking out what’s most exciting from the street stalls of India and bringing it to NYC.
Rowdy Rooster is the latest adventure by Unapologetic Foods (Dhamaka, Adda, Semma) led by Chef Chintan Pandya & Restaurateur Roni Mazumdar. A tiny East Village joint serving you some of the boldest spices that fried chicken has met.
Chef Chintan travelled extensively across South-East Asia to learn the local recipes that might not have found its way outside of those neighborhoods. Roni moved to The Bronx from Kolkata at the age of 13. He loved his dose of Fried Chicken but never truly found his dreamy version that he remembered from a street cart on the outskirts of Kolkata, India. Both Roni & Chintan put various versions of Fried Chickens in their restaurants (Rahi & Adda) and they quickly became one of the most popular items on the menu as well as gaining critical acclaim. New York Magazine named Adda’s rendition of Fried chicken as one of the Top 10 in NYC, while Rahi’s Fried Chicken Sandwich was ranked #1 in NYC by Zagat / Infatuation. The New York Times featured them as one of the best dishes to order during the Pandemic. After a few years of trial, they are finally bringing a real full-fledged Indian Fried Chicken joint that they both crave from their childhood days.
