Makina is an established, woman-owned, Eritrean-Ethiopian Hospitality Company with a food truck, a catering kitchen, and a year-round canteen on Governors Island. Makina’s mission is to serve delicious East African food without fear of putting a spin on this time-honored cuisine, and to educate their public about the history and culture behind this long-standing culinary tradition.
The Server + Brand Ambassador position on Governors Island presents an exciting opportunity for an experienced hospitality professional with a sense of adventure and a strong work ethic to be part of a unique enterprise on this city-owned island park in the middle of the New York Harbor.
About The Role
Makina seeks the help of a responsible, customer service focussed individual to be the face of Makina Governors Island for the coming busy season and beyond. The Server + Brand Ambassador will be responsible for creating a truly hospitable experience for the canteen’s customer, educating patrons on the cuisine, and serving food and drink with pleasure. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, a passion for cultivating a warm environment, and be able to work both independently and as a member of a team. This is a full-time, tipped position.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in a similar role
- Passionate commitment to friendly customer service
- Daytime and weekend availability
- Food Handler’s Certification
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships
- Capacity to work well in a team and autonomously
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
- Capable of lifting 30+ pounds
- High standards for cleanliness
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Set up canteen for service
- Assist and serve customers, cultivating repeat business
- Maintain cleanliness of all service areas
- Work special events and private caterings on the island
- Attend to daily breakdown of service and seating areas
- Execute end-of-day cash reconciliation
- Write and send end-of-day report with pertinent information about the day’s service
- Display amazing customer service and represent the Makina brand with enthusiasm
- Exhibit menu and product knowledge
- Follow company policies, procedures, and safety rules
- Communicate effectively with team members and management
- Work happily and respectfully as part of the team
- Show initiative in the face of changes, challenges, and new opportunities
- Promote an environment of fun, kindness, and respect!
Compensation Details
Compensation: Hourly ($16.50) plus tips
