JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION SUMMARY
The Sommelier will be responsible for helping to maintain the integrity of the wine & sake program that meets the goals set by management while delivering proper beverage service in our dining room. A Sommelier is responsible for not only a thoughtful, attentive wine service, but also a supportive demeanor towards colleagues with a keen sense of guest’s needs. The Sommelier is required to work closely with the service team to ensure guest satisfaction and smooth service. The Sommelier should have the ability to naturally guide guests towards food & wine pairings to elevate their dining experience.
The wine list will be a curated mix of wine & sake from the major regions of the world. An open mind and passion for great wine & sake of varying provenance will allow us to build an iconic beverage program that speaks to the potential of a modern wine list. Experience in fine dining is ideal, along with great communication and attention to detail.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide friendly, gracious, detail-oriented service to create a memorable dining experience
- Complete opening side work checklist for shift daily
- Prepare for service by setting up beverage station(s)
- Develop and lead staff education on all aspects of beverage program inclusive of wine, sake, beer, and spirits
- Maintain expert knowledge of all menu offerings
- Stock and organize all beverages to maintain highest level of cleanliness possible
- Greet guests promptly and take initial beverage order at the appropriate time within service
- Help guests to make selections from beverage menus, suggest courses and pairings, explain any off-menu dishes and answer all food preparation questions
- Able to perform all POS functions: reading KDS and fulling tickets
- Support servers and bussers when necessary to ensure best in class service for our guests
- Check identification of all guests who appear under 30 to verify they are of legal drinking age prior to serving them
- Prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in accordance with service standards
- Mitigate guest complaints by finding a way to say yes; Involve the Manager on Duty as needed
- Complete closing side work checklist for every shift
- Maintain sanitation to Department of Health standards; Keep work area clean and organized
- Inform Manager on Duty immediately of any DOH or OSHA/workplace safety violations
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- The ability to speak and understand English

- The ability to lift at least 30 pounds on a regular basis
- The ability to bend, stoop, stand and perform extensive walking for 8-10 hours a day, including going up and down stairs multiple times per day

- Able to work nights, weekends and holidays, and variable schedule, per the needs of the business

- Strict adherence to posted schedule and clock in/out at times
- Communicate information effectively and efficiently
- Maintain general knowledge of the restaurant, location, transportation, management team, etc.
- Participate in community events and ensure corporate social responsibility goals of Company are met
- Attend mandatory meetings
- Adhere to all HR policies and guidelines
- Perform all other related and compatible duties as assigned by the Management Team
- Update knowledge and skills by participating in staff training opportunities

REQUIREMENTS
- At least 12-24 months as a sommelier at a high-volume restaurant
- Exceptional interpersonal skills
- Understanding of hygiene and food safety rules
- Multi-tasking abilities
- Ability to remain calm and professional in a fast-paced work environment
