Job Details

Runner & Stone is a neighborhood bakery and cafe in Gowanus, Brooklyn, serving breakfast and lunch, and selling bread and pastries retail, wholesale and at farmers' markets throughout New York City.  We have strong relationships with local farmers, growers, millers and processors, and continue to expand our network to bring more local fruit, produce, grain, dairy, eggs and meat to the table in order to support a sustainable and just regional economy.  In step with our commitment to the region, we have a strong commitment to our staff and have created a diverse and inclusive community of current and ex-employees focused on collaboration, acceptance, encouragement and fair hiring and employment practices.

Job Description:

We are looking to hire a baker for full-time work. Our bakery runs on a four day per week work schedule, with shifts averaging 10 hours (and three days off).  The baker position will include the following:

-either a 5am or 2pm shift start time
-scaling and mixing of bread and viennoisseries doughs
-shaping of bread and viennoisseries
-scoring and baking bread in deck ovens and finishing and baking pastries in convection ovens
-mixing and baking cakes and other pastries
-plating desserts during dinner service
-working closely with co-workers and coordinating space and production schedules in our small bakery

Applicant must be hard-working, a good communicator, ready to take on a full range of responsibilities, and excited about working in a small, artisan bakery with very high standards. Hours will be early morning and the applicant will be expected to plan their personal schedule accordingly.  The position will include mixing, shaping, and baking of bread and viennoisseries, and therefore requires basic professional bread and pastry skills. This is great position for a baker looking to expand their skills, as it offers small production of a large range of products with a high level of responsibility.

"Runner & Stone" refers to the two stones used to grind grain in a traditional mill, the runner stone and the base stone. The traditional mill is an important icon to us because it symbolizes our philosophy while grounding us in our neighborhood. Runner & Stone is located a few blocks away from the site of the first tide water grist mill in New York City. This historic location reminds us of a time when food, including primary ingredients, was largely sourced and produced locally. Discovering this rich history and tradition confirmed what we already knew; we had found the perfect spot in the Gowanus to share our love of hand-crafted food with you.
