Position: Line Cook / Prep Cook
Job Type: Part TimeWage/
Salary: $18 - 20 an hour
Experience: Intermediate
Obligations:
- Research and maintain a working knowledge of developments in the coffee and food industries
- Must be willing to accept guidance and support from kitchen manager
- Prepare foods and recipes to company standards (including breakfast, bagels, sandwiches, soups, salads, and all necessary condiments / ingredients)
- Maintain facilities and kitchen equipment so that all is operational and is in keeping with city building and public health codes
- Develop or maintain a 'clean as you go' workflow; participate in deep cleaning to augment 'clean as you go' workflow
- Must be able to work a minimum of 50 weeks in a calendar year
- Must love humanity and be able to provide caring and professional customer service
- Strive to be a little bit better today than yesterday
Qualifications:
- Proficient in cooking in a professional kitchen
- Hold or able to obtain City of Chicago food handler (or food manager) certification
- Familiarity and skill in using a variety of professional kitchen tools, utensils, devices, etc.
- Ability to work on multiple projects (recipes) simultaneously
- Keen awareness of what is happening in the kitchen at all times
- Ability to stand on one's feet and work effectively for up to 5.5 hours without a break
Responsibilities:
- Ability to bend to grasp objects, climb step stool and lift loads up to 50 lbs unassisted
- Ability to identify and complete tasks with minimum supervision
- Arrive at cafe (or on site) on time and be prepared to perform all duties; leave cafe with the team
- Maintain a friendly disposition at all times
- Willingness to learn and use sustainable kitchen practices
- Responsible for completing breakfast, brunch and lunch orders in a timely manner
- Work on the line independently or as a team
- Maintain mise-en-place throughout the kitchen for all ingredients, prepared foods, equipment, and utensils
- The kitchen must always remain clean and organized
- Keep the kitchen clean, sanitary, rotating stock, making sure food is where it should be etc. all in accord with food safety standards
- Remember (memorize) recipes, asking questions, and taking initiative when appropriate
- Maintain the scullery and make certain that dishes and utensils are cleaned correctly
- Line cooks are responsible for keeping a clean kitchen
- Contribute positively to a cooperative work environment
- Receive deliveries from farmers and food distributors
- Effectively communicate and share information with co-workers, supervisor and management
- Assist in assuring that the restaurant/ café runs at the highest standard, consistantly producing an excellent coffee and food experience
- Other duties as assigned
