Job Details

Chef Matt Baker is seeking a General Manager for Gravitas, the Michelin Star dining room in Ivy City, and The Conservatory, the rooftop Cocktail Bar and Garden, located above Gravitas. We are seeking an experienced and confident leader who understands the standards of world class service and hospitality and would like to be a part of a growing restaurant group while working among some of the city’s best hospitality and culinary professionals.

Gravitas is a small, vibrant 75 seat fine dining, New American restaurant, serving tasting menus, and dedicated to seasonal cooking and sourcing from local farms and waters. The Conservatory is a rooftop bar and lounge, surrounded by an urban culinary garden, open for evening service for wine, cocktails and dinner options that range from light bites to a 3-course prix fixe.

We are looking for our General Manager to run all aspects of the front of the house and service. Responsibilities will also include wine and beverage service, reservations, private dining management, marketing, hiring and firing, training, staff management and discipline.

We seek a candidate that is passionate about hospitality, with a strong love for this industry, food and wine. Candidate should be professional and able to train and motivate the staff. We seek a person who is organized with strong computer skills, and the skill set to be able to manage back office tasks like scheduling, beverage costing and project management. Ideal candidate will be a self-starter, organized, able to manage a team of 20-30 employees. 

The General Manager will work closely with Chef Baker and our Director of Operations on all restaurant operations, restaurant financials, guest relations, staff development, marketing and promotions. Ideal candidate should have a minimum of 3 years of fine dining experience in a managerial roll.

Restaurant Manager Qualifications:

  • Sommelier experience is preferred but not required
  • Minimum of 3 years of General Management experience in an upscale or fine dining restaurant.
  • Experience with Tasting Menus and Wine Pairings
  • Confident financial acumen - having the ability to read and interpret financial statements
  • Finding solutions to any issues that arise and having excellent project execution
  • Must be able to work in a standing position for long periods of time
  • Professional appearance and grooming standards appropriate for a premier fine dining restaurant
  • Full time flexibility and availability to work
