Whirlwind Coffee Co., is a coffee roastery in Oak Park IL, with the mission of giving all net profits back to charities and communities in need. We are looking to hire a motivated super human with a ton of moxie and love for coffee. This front of the house, customer-facing role will provide exceptional customer service and a damn good cup of coffee.

You will be starting at the ground floor with us so you must be wired to contribute -- not sit and wait to be told. Your values, work ethic, and ability to work with others is off the charts. At Whirlwind we believe our actions should do all the talking -- we hope you believe this too.

About Whirlwind Coffee

Founded on a love for coffee and desire to do more, our mission is simple:

As Barista/Cashier and teammate, you will contribute by executing our specialty beverage menu, creating awesome guest experiences, and growing sales while maximizing profit. Additional training will be provided depending on existing experience.

  • Maintaining all cafe related coffee equipment, inventory, and POS processes
  • Create delicious coffee to the best tasting parameters (and tasting those parameters daily),
  • Understands and complies consistently with our standard portion sizes, quality standards, policies and procedures.
  • Completes opening/closing checklist (based on shift)
  • Performs mid-shift tasks and cleaning
  • Identifies customer needs and makes recommendations for new products
  • Delivers excellent customer service with a professional demeanor
  • Creates a unique and welcoming atmosphere that encourages coffee culture, collaboration and community.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Ideally 2+ years of coffee experience with various brewing methods (batch, pour over, espresso).
  • Must be able to have effortless conversations and be comfortable interacting with people.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Must have a strong desire to exceed customer expectations
  • Be able to reach, bend, stoop and frequently lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Be able to work in a standing position for long periods of time.
  • Must have exceptional hygiene and grooming habits.
  • Consistently works to improve and grow
  • Understands how to keep refrigeration equipment and storage clean and organized
  • Possesses working knowledge of specialty coffee and demonstrates desire to grow

Candidates with past barista training, roastery, or other coffee related experience is a plus. However we will consider (and encourage) candidates from other backgrounds providing they meet our other core requirements.

  • Great organizational and people skills. Strong, clear communication is necessary.
  • Must be a problem solver, someone with a natural passion for solving challenges and thoughtfully sharing with others the solutions they’ve come up with.
  • Should exude confidence, positivity, motivation and empathy; someone who brings the best out in people and the room is better because they are in it.
  • Must be willing and enthusiastic to learn/operate a spectrum of equipment related to coffee brewing.
  • An innovative soul that isn’t scared of continually trying or learning new things in the name of progress.
  • MUST have a “No job is too small” attitude and be capable of helping others lift heavy objects from time to time (think coffee beans).

Approx. 28 to 35 hours. Includes free coffee beverages during your shift. :)

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Salary: $13 to $15 per hour base, and with tips. You will consistently average $19 to $22 per hour.

  • Barista experience: 1 year (Required)


  • Food Handler Certification (Preferred)
