Organization Description:
Hollywood Food Coalition (HoFoCo) is a mission-driven non-profit organization addressing issues around
homelessness and poverty in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles. HoFoCo has four areas of operation:
Community Dinner, Community Exchange, Community Wellness and Community Building. Our
Community Dinner is the bedrock of our organization’s 35 year history of providing assistance to our
most vulnerable community members.
Position Summary:
We are looking for a creative sous chef to work with our head chef and volunteers in our busy and growing
Community Dinner program.
Do you like not knowing what you are going to cook each day? Do you enjoy creating new dishes on the
fly and figuring out how to use unique ingredients in healthy and delicious ways? Do you like working
with new people each day and guiding them in the preparation of different parts of our dinner? Do you
like the challenge of creating a fun, collaborative cooking environment that results in an engaging
volunteer experience and beautiful, succulent vegetarian, vegan and protein options for our 200 + meals
for our dinner guests? If so, this could be a match made in heaven for you and us.
Hollywood Food Coalition is an organization with very deep community ties. Our nightly Community
Dinner is overseen by our head chef, kitchen manager, and small staff supported by a robust group of
different volunteers each day who assist with meal preparation and meal service. The food used to
prepare our nightly meal is recovered from food producers, grocery stores, farms, restaurants, bakeries,
wholesalers and caterers. Non-perishable items are donated through community drives. All food is
received and stored at our Community Exchange Program location and supplied daily to our kitchen
location. We don’t know what we will be receiving each day at the Exchange. We receive raw ingredients
and prepared foods and have to figure out ways to use them. We are committed to reducing food waste
of all kinds.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Help create new menu items, guided by our head chef, using food that comes to us in all forms.
Must embrace the creativity of functioning in a style that is unusual for professionally trained
chefs.
2. Train our volunteers to prepare our dinner. Must be comfortable welcoming new people to the
kitchen and assigning meal preparation tasks to them. Our weekend service is smaller than our
week day service, requiring preparation for approximately 100 people.
3. Menus created will vary each week depending on available ingredients. Vegan and/or vegetarian
options are part of each day’s menu.
4. When working on the weekend, monitor and direct staff and volunteers from meal prep through
service.
5. Assist with maintaining quality control during meal preparation and service.
6. Assist with inventory and ordering from the Community Exchange.
7. Report any needed repairs or maintenance of kitchen appliances to head chef.
8. Maintain a clean kitchen and follow all state food safety and sanitation laws.
9. Assist head chef with tracking, recording, and maintaining inventory stock as needed, including
foods, beverages, and kitchen supplies in conjunction with the Community Exchange.
10. Must be comfortable serving unhoused and vulnerable guests who come to us each night.
Preferred Requirements and Qualifications:
● 2 years experience in a professional kitchen
● Passionate about cooking with a great palette and sense of presentation
● Ability to handle multiple tasks and work well in an environment with time constraints
● Ability to help train and develop staff and volunteers and build team morale
● Ability to troubleshoot effectively
● California Food Handlers Certification (ServSafe)
● Excellent time management and organizational skills
● Must be able to represent the mission and vision of the organization to the volunteers and
community that joins us each day
● Advanced Knife Skills
Required Skills:

● Food Safety Knowledge
● Safety Procedures Knowledge
