Emma’s Torch is a non-profit social enterprise. Our mission is to train refugees, asylees, andsurvivors of human trafficking in the culinary arts and to empower them to build meaningful careersin the culinary industry. Our students participate in a full-time, paid, culinary training program inpreparation for job placement. We celebrate what they have to offer, and we affirm their innate valueand power. Emma’s Torch honors Emma Lazarus, a staunch advocate for refugee rights whosepoem, “The New Colossus,” adorns the Statue of Liberty.Founded in 2016, Emma’s Torch piloted our signature classroom café program in 2017. In May2018, we opened our first full-service restaurant in Brooklyn, receiving recognition from outlets suchas the New Yorker, the Today Show, Bloomberg, CNN, and the Guardian, among many others. Therestaurant, which houses our Culinary Training Program, has cemented Emma’s Torch as acommunity institution.In response to increased demand for our services, we are embarking on an ambitious period ofgrowth, expanding our operations to the D.C. metropolitan area. Position Summary:
We are seeking an empathetic and passionate DC Area Cafe Manager and FOH Instructor to educate our students and support the development and smooth management of our social venture. They will help to design operations of a new and growing business, supporting the design of the Emma’s Torch cafe in the DC area and managing it once open. This team member will be responsible for managing Emma’s Torch cafe, collaborating on the design and support of enterprise operations, providing a safe and constructive work environment for the students, and managing the day-to-day front of house & service operations. The DC Area CafeManager and FOH Instructor position at Emma’s Torch is a unique opportunity to work in a restaurant that allows you to be actively involved in all aspects of the operation, as well as practice and develop your teaching and leadership skills as you work with our unique student base.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
- Guest Experience (40%)
- Helping to manage the social enterprise, including touching tables, running food, overseeing staff, and monitoring the door as needed
- Ensure each guest has a positive and meaningful experience, driving repeat visits
- Open and close the restaurant, including preparing and reconciling closing banks, conducting pre-shifts with your team, writing daily recaps, and doing the final restaurant walk-through.
- Build and maintain strong, long-lasting guest relationships with Emma’s Torch through hospitality, service and marketing efforts
- Collaborate with the marketing team to build and promote operations-related content across all marketing and social channels
- Ensure Emma’s Torch social enterprises run smoothly, ensuring cleanliness, professional standards, and all regulations are met
- Maintain working knowledge of restaurant dishes and operations, to effectively replicate and teach to students
- Assist with scheduling,labor control, and DOH guidelines
- Systems and Process Management (30%)
- Accountable for efficient systems and processes in all facets of the operation at social enterprises, including reservation, POS, online ordering & delivery, and purchasing & inventory systems
- Assure excellence in all restaurant collateral including menus, signage, etc.
- Develop relationships with vendors
- Collaborate with Culinary Director and Sous Chef on menu costing and rollout
- Teaching & Mentorship 30%
- Mentor and support students throughout their experience at Emma’s Torch enterprises in the DC area
- Be an example for work ethic, accountability, conduct, training, organization, sanitation, professionalism in a professional environment
- Understand and communicate Emma’s Torch values and brand philosophy to guests, staff, and set the tone for a positive work environment
- Assist in providing training to students
- Provide clear, transparent, honest feedback on performance issues
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
- 5+ years progressive experience in the Front of House
- Food Safety Handler’s License within three months of hiring
- Knowledge in the Google Suite / Microsoft Office
- Experience with POS and Cash Handling (proficiency with Toast a plus)
- Available for a Wednesday-Sunday schedule

- Self-motivated with an excellent work ethic
- Proficient in English (additional languages a plus)
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs
- Able to stand/walk for at least 8 hours
- Able to work Full-Time, mornings, nights, and weekends as needed
- Ability to perform essential job functions when working under stress, in fast-paced environments
