We’re looking for a full-time cook to join Kumiko, the Japanese Dining Bar in Chicago’s West Loop. There is the option for part time as well, please note your preference with your application.
Job Summary
You may be familiar with Kumiko as a cocktail bar, which is part of what we are, but Kumiko is also a dining bar, where food and drink are given the same amount of attention and care.
The ideal person will have experience cooking from an a la carte menu. We are a neighborhood place with the intentions and practices of a fine-dining restaurant – fast-paced, and refined. You’re not just another cook, but an integral part of the kitchen team—you’ll be prepping and executing dishes side-by-side with our Chef de Cuisine Emery Ebarle.
A background in Japanese cooking and ingredients is great, but not essential. What is essential is that you are a kind person, a hard worker, and someone who enjoys cooking and is ready to learn more and grow with a small team.

- Handles service pieces and equipment with care.
- Communicate openly and often with your fellow cooks and the service team.
- Keeps their station and equipment clean, tidy, and in proper working condition.

Job Qualifications:
- Willingness to work restaurant operating hours Wednesday through Sunday
- The physical ability to perform all assigned duties, demonstrating energy and stamina throughout the entire shift.
- Have an interest in learning about and cooking Japanese food.
- Able to lift at least 40 lbs and walk up and down flights of stairs regularly.
Compensation Details
Full Time Compensation: Your guaranteed annual base salary is $40,000. With service charges divided among kitchen staff, the annual total is closer to $52,000.
Part Time Compensation: Hourly rate plus service charges and tips. Averages to $20/hr.
