ISO restaurant GM that is ready to change tracks

We offer back of house restaurant tech software to improve the GM experience.  MarginEdge is looking for someone who has sweated behind the line, sweated over the books, sweated more shift changes than you can count.  Someone who has apologized to the dining room when the kitchen crashed but was also the person you “had to know” to get a table on a Saturday night. We know you have to live it to get it - that’s why we don’t hire salespeople who have to learn about restaurants, we hire restaurant people who are open to a new craft and their next chapter.

If you’ve run a restaurant, you know how many emails, phone calls and rep drop-ins you must sift through. You also know that most of what they are pushing isn’t worth the time to hear them out.  We are different - and we only hire people who viscerally appreciate how sacred time in a restaurant GM or owner’s schedule is -and also know that what we are telling them about is worth their time to listen.

While we are an Arlington/DC-based company, we are looking for new members of our sales team to be based nation-wide. This is currently a work-from-home position, however, when Covid is in our rear-view mirror you will be calling on restaurants in your area in person - bringing donuts to restaurants, trading restaurant war stories and adding a whole lot of empathy to the conversation.

Oh yeah, we also offer hours that don’t involve 2am inventory followed by opening the restaurant the next morning. Your phone number will not be on our “call out” list and you will largely work when the rest of the world does - which is, dare we say, freaking awesome.

Pay: $50,000 base salary + uncapped commission

MarginEdge:  A workplace with purpose.

You know that feeling when you have a mind-blowing experience at a restaurant? It wasn’t really about the food (okay, it was a little about the food) but more about the way you felt. You might not be able to put your finger on what part you liked most, but it was magic and you know you will be back.

Spoiler - not a single piece of a restaurant experience is an accident and as a team built by former restaurant operators, we know just how freaking hard this is to pull off.

At MarginEdge our mission is to serve restaurant operators with the same energy, attention to detail and passion that they bring to their guests. Our culture is deeply rooted in service, partially because that’s where so many of our team came from, but also because we believe it is just the right way to run a business. Our software is designed with deep empathy for the complexity of running a restaurant and our mission is to make the magic just a little easier for operators by taking the complex (read: very annoying) back-office tasks off their plate, while empowering them with real-time data.

We do this through the development of cutting edge technology that solves truly (truly) hard problems, data science that can start to answer questions for operators where gut instinct used to be their only tool, and world class service that is an extension of who we are as an organization.

Our founders share a deep history in both owning and operating restaurants and in building successful tech companies. We are venture-backed, serve 2,500+ restaurants and boast a 93+% client retention rate.

We enable restaurants to make magic while knowing we are doing the same for them.

From your home office, you’ll...

  • Contact restaurant owners across the country to excite them about our platform and “help us help them.” Our goal is to give restaurant managers and owners daily visibility into their Prime Costs, so there are no surprises at the end of the month.
  • Generate your own business (we are making great strides with lead generation, but that will be the gravy, you make your own steak).
  • Execute discovery calls or meetings (listen), then a web-based demo (listen some more and talk a little bit).
  • Adhere to predefined activity metrics (includes calls, emails and visiting restaurants).
  • Stay organized because you are serious about using our database platform (Salesforce) every day.

Have to Haves:

  • You are a former restaurant general manager or owner with 3+ years of experience (bonus points for experience with a national or regional multi-unit restaurant chain)
  • Admin duties and professional, succinct writing skills are requirements, perhaps higher than in your past restaurant positions. A writing sample will be required.
  • Following your career running restaurants, you are open to your next career- a craft different than your previous, but a craft, nonetheless.
  • Shifting from restaurant ops to sales, you’re still happy to work hard, and thrilled to be doing it during traditional business hours.
  • Respect for process, personalization, and relevance.
  • You love being a part of a team.  Every day we say, “we win together” (yeah it sounds corny when we say it, but we say it anyway)
  • You love restaurants. Everybody loves restaurants but you really love restaurants.

Nice to Haves:

  • From your restaurant experience, you know that sales cures all and that every minute a manager is in the office is a minute that they are not with staff and / or guests.
  • You know the right time to join a company.
  • Hospitality tech-sales experience.
  • If you do have previous sales experience, you love using a CRM system.
    • OK, well “like” using a CRM system.
      • OK, well you use it.
        • No seriously, you do. Every day, all day.
  • You are curious. You are constantly trying to learn and improve in your craft.
  • You have a hobby / passion. You love something other than your current job!

The Ideal Candidate:

We want the best people, period. We strongly encourage people of every color, orientation, age, and gender to apply. Because we value a diverse workplace, we prioritize an inclusive climate absent of discrimination and harassment during the application process and after you join the team.

While this would be your next chapter / career, you continue to be hungry to climb to the top of your new career. The best salespeople treat their job as a craft and we train to that, along with all the high standards that come along with it. You are smart and entrepreneurial and understand that you need to follow recipes before you can create specials. You might be starting something new, but there is opportunity, and a need for you to grow quickly into a position to lead within a year.

What’s it like to work for MarginEdge?

Imagine the fun of a great restaurant - surrounded by a team of people that care about hospitality, care about quality, and care about each other - then subtract the long nights, weekends, drunk customers at the voila, MarginEdge!

We work hard, we work fast and we fuel our work with a commitment of transparency from leadership, straight talk and trust between teams. We believe that the best people do their best work when they feel empowered - so whether you are remote or in our office (likely eating a catered lunch from our clients) you get to work with your manager to call your shot on what works best for you.

And surprising exactly no one, we are obsessed with restaurants so most water cooler talk (virtual or IRL) will probably be about the pasta at our new client’s spot in the city or the burger we just can’t get off our minds from lunch last week.  In addition to being so dynamic, we stay grounded in embracing a flat organization with robust opportunities to engage with C-Suite members about any topic you have in mind.

Check out our 100% “Recommend to a Friend” rating from anonymous employee reviews on Glassdoor.

Oh, and our recognition in the Washington Post as a  top small businesses to work for in 2021!

And most important, what our customers think about our work on Capterra and G2 Crowd.

Benefits:  (Shut the front door, they are amazing, too!)

In order to fuel this rocket ship, we need to build a team as passionate about our work and product as we are. We believe that top talent (that’s you!) should feel deeply connected to their work, appreciated for the time they give to building our organization and have the balance necessary to give their best during work hours and all those after-hours too.

We do this by offering a suite of kick ass benefits not only to be competitive and catch the eye of super smart people (that’s you again!) but also provide the foundation for a career you love and a life outside of work you love just as much.

  • Unlimited Paid Time Off (and we mean it, we encourage your healthy work life balance!)
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, and Short/Long-Term Disability Insurance (preventative care for the win)
  • Health Savings Account with employer match (dependent upon your medical plan selection)
  • Commuter benefits with employer contribution (excluding limos and helos - for now)
  • Generous Life Insurance Plan
  • Short and Long-Term Disability
  • 9 Company-Paid Holidays
  • 401(k) and matching
  • Stock Options to buy into everything we are doing to support this industry
  • 12-week fully Paid Parental Leave

Our Fine Print is Bold: We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran, marital, disability status or any other characteristic protected by law. You be you.  While we are proudest of our commitment to exceptional culture and creating a truly excellent work environment, we see our benefits as an extension of that belief. Our benefits package is designed to be exceptionally competitive and a reflection of our commitment to a best-in-class workplace for all.

Where Hospitality Met Technology
Our story began in a place where many restaurateurs have been themselves—stuck doing manual invoice data entry and inventory in a tiny (we’re talking 4ft x 5ft) closet in the back of a kitchen, wondering why the love of food and hospitality came with so many papercuts. Bo and Roy, two of our founders, have more than 40 years of restaurant experience between them. They’ve built and operated over 25 restaurants around the nation. Even though the size of their back offices differed, the problems they faced as operators didn’t. With a background in successful tech entrepreneurship, Bo assembled Roy and two long-time friends, colleagues, and successful technologists, Mike and Sam. Together, they constructed a creative solution to make running a restaurant easier— and MarginEdge was born.
