The Chef plays a pivotal role in the Family’s household, balancing the requests of a health- minded Family, with sophisticated palates. The chef is responsible for preparing multiple meals a day, shopping for ingredients, keeping the kitchen clean and maintaining an organized pantry. The Chef works closely with the Family to create thoughtful menus for casual dining as well as larger parties. For children’s parties and events, the Chef will assist his/her Manager and arrange for caterers and service staff. The Chef must be willing to travel to nearby properties for several days at a time and must be able to drive.

The ideal Chef is formally trained and takes pride in his/her meal presentation. He/she will have a passion for food and enthusiasm for learning new techniques and recipes, while also recognizing that the Family’s requests take precedence over his/her own ideas. The ideal Chef has a positive attitude, works well with a team and enjoys children. He/she must be comfortable working long hours - sometimes up to 14 hours in a day. He/she must be willing to take on tasks such as pantry organization and silver polishing. The Chef must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time and lift 50 pounds.


Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Shop for the best quality ingredients (local and/or organic). This may include visiting farmer’s markets, specialty stores, or researching online sources.
  • Prepare healthy and balanced meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Develop and maintain extensive wine knowledge including the maintenance of the online wine inventory upon consumption for all properties.
  • Research local and organic products.
  • Serve meals.
  • Occasional bartending as needed.
  • Create and review menus with the principal.
  • Assist the Property Manager and Horticulturalist in the Long Island gardens.
  • Develop homemade, all-natural healthy snacks.
  • Arrange and oversee caterers and staff for larger functions as needed.
  • Maintain kitchen and pantry inventory (i.e. liquor, pantry goods, small appliances, utensils, etc.).
  • Provide a clean and safe kitchen environment at all times since children may be running around the kitchen.
  • Provide healthy staff meals daily and/or organize a take-out order.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, pantry, breakfast room, cabinets, and appliances.
  • Formal table setting and service.
  • Assist children in the kitchen (i.e. teaching them simple baking tasks and allowing them to help with simple food preparation).
  • Answer the house telephone and take messages as directed by his/her Manager.
  • Follow set protocols for deliveries and gifts.
