Position: Server

Portale Restaurant is an upscale-casual Italian restaurant in the neighborhood of Chelsea led by Chef Alfred Portale, the James Beard award-winning chef and best-selling cookbook author. We are searching for talented, hardworking, team and hospitality-oriented individuals who can help us create a warm and welcoming environment that serves thoughtful and delicious food and beverage offerings. We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced restaurant professional with open availability to join our team. We want serious people who know how to have fun. 


·         Complete opening side work checklist for shift daily

·         Prepare dining room for service by clothing tables and setting decorations, condiments, candles, napkins, plates and utensils

·         Greet guests promptly and take initial beverage order

·         Help guests to make selections from food and beverage menus, suggest courses and pairings, explain any off-menu dishes, answering all food preparation questions

·         Take orders from guests and input into POS, ensuring 100% accuracy

·         Handle guests’ special dietary needs, allergies or special requests with utmost sensitivity, following Company procedure as outlined in the Employee Handbook

·         Communicate with kitchen to manage timing of courses, any guest feedback, etc.

·         Deal with guest complaints by finding a way to say yes; Involve the Manager on Duty as needed

·         Process guest payments in timely, accurate manner

·         Process financials on shift-by-shift basis, including submitting accurate cash sales

·         Accurately report cash tips and contribute to tip pool; Record tip information on sheet, as directed by Management

·         Maintain expert knowledge of all menu offerings

·         Update knowledge and skills by participating in staff training opportunities

·         Complete closing side work checklist for shift daily

·         Maintain sanitation to Department of Health standards; Keep work area clean and organized

·         Inform Manager on Duty immediately of any DOH or OSHA/workplace safety violations

·         Knowledgeable in all restaurant operations

Essential Functions:

·         The ability to speak, understand, read and write in English

·         The ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal direction

·         The ability to understand basic math

·         The ability to work independently or as part of a team

·         The ability to lift at least 30 pounds on a regular basis

·         The ability to bend, stoop, stand and perform extensive walking for 8-10 hours a day

·         Adaptable in fast-paced and challenging work environment

·         Organized approach to projects

·         Able to take and give direction

·         Able to approach their work with a sense of ownership and work with a sense of urgency

·         Able to work nights, weekends and holidays, and variable schedule, per the needs of the business

·         Ability to perform essential job functions under pressure, maintain professionalism when working under stress

·         Demonstrate positive leadership characteristics, which inspire team members to meet and exceed standards

·         Polished personal presentation; grooming meets Company standards, as outlined by Employee Handbook

·         Strict adherence to posted schedule and clock in/out at times

·         Communicates information effectively and efficiently

·         Maintains general knowledge of the restaurant, location, transportation, management team, etc.

·         Ability to utilize traditional software programs such as Gmail, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), and any additional systems as needed

·         Participate in community events and ensure corporate social responsibility goals of Company are met

·         Attend mandatory meetings

·         Adhere to all HR policies and guidelines

Minimum 3 years of NYC Restaurant Experience in high volume, fine dining restaurants 

  • Able to stand for a 10-12 hour shifts
  • Available to work late nights, holidays and long days as necessary
  • Preferred 3-5 years prior BOH experience in a high volume establishment
