The Foodshed Family of restaurants, helmed by James Beard award winning chef Spike Gjerde (Woodberry Kitchen), is looking for a General Manager at our wholly unique beach experience on Harbor Point. We import tons of sand each year to make this space a reality and now we need an outstanding leader to attract a strong management team and staff and make the 2020 season a huge success.
Sandlot provides open-air seating, sweeping views of the harbor, volleyball courts, and an extremely energetic atmosphere. The main kitchen, all storage, refrigeration, and bathrooms, are housed in converted shipping containers, as is one of the bars. The other bar is built into an Airstream and sits directly across from our wood fire grill and rotisserie! There are few fully "indoor" work areas, and only one covered guest area, so business is very weather dependent and the work is physically demanding. Flexibility and a great attitude are absolutely necessary, as is a desire to work outside in the hot sun, for long hours on your feet, monitoring team members and thousands of guests across the expansive beach.
Having a genuine interest in the local, responsibly sourced food community, is greatly appreciated as well. Our beach bar offers guests exceptional fare with empathetic service. Sourcing entirely from the fields and waters of the Mid-Atlantic, Sandlot presents local cuisine and whimsical, regionally-inspired cocktails, farm beers, and more. The General Manager will help to create and adjust the bar and food menus throughout the season, so we require strong beverage and food knowledge as part of a fundamental skillset.
During the season, the candidate we are looking for will have a hands-on approach to management and is expected to be on the "floor" assisting staff and ensuring that they are working as a team to create a memorable experience for our guest. The General Manager will handle staffing and inventories to meet budgeted labor costs and costs of goods sold, adjusting for weather changes, holidays, special events, etc.. Other primary functions will be scheduling, payroll, and tip distribution for the service team.
During the current off-season, November through April, the General Manager will be networking and negotiating with vendors, while also planning and booking activities and events to ensure that the upcoming summer season is fruitful. This position will be responsible to recruit and oversee a team of about 80-100 to work all aspects of Sandlot throughout the summer and fall. Ideally, the full management team and a significant portion of the staff will be onboarded before opening day. We are looking for someone to begin as soon as possible to prepare properly for training in April and the early May opening.
The General Manager is a Full-Time Salaried position and oversees both FOH and BOH operations, as mentioned above, during the six-month “summer”, then plans and strategizes for 40-50 hours per week throughout the rest of the year. Health benefits are available with a partial company contribution and vision, dental, life, and short-term disability insurances, are also accessible if desired. Vacation and sick pay as well as possible pretax elections of Commuter Benefits and a Health Savings Account round out the compensation package.
