Job Details

Russ & Daughters Cafe (127 Orchard Street) is looking to hire a motivated experienced runner/busser/backserver as we look ahead to our busy holiday season. An enthusiasm for food, beverage, and excellent customer service is required. We are a full-service, high-volume restaurant busiest at brunch on the weekends. The role entails supporting the servers, bartenders, hosts, and managers throughout service. Our tight-knit team strives to bring together bright and charismatic hospitality professionals with enthusiasm for the rich history and culinary traditions of the Lower East Side.

Responsibilities include:
- Run and introduce dishes to guests. Answer questions about the menu, including allergy concerns. Relay guests' requests and preferences to servers and/or kitchen staff.
- Demonstrate a sense of urgency to keep up with high volume, while remaining calm and patient with guests and coworkers.
- Provide expert knowledge for guests not only of our food and beverage menus, but also about the history of Russ & Daughters and the surrounding culture of the neighborhood.
- Demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for Jewish cuisine, whether it comes from life-long exposure or is new to you!
- Make guests from all walks of life feel at home. Meet the guest wherever they are in their knowledge - some will need every dish explained, others will want you to listen to their stories of their grandmother's version.
- Maintain a polished and patient demeanor even under the pressure of fast-paced brunch service.
- Be a team-player. All members of our staff help coworkers with a range of tasks, including running food, bussing tables, packing guests' leftovers to take home, etc.

Skills/Requirements:
Though direct experience as a busser/runner is not required, some exposure to a fast-paced food service role is a major plus. Candidates should have a curiosity and eagerness to learn our cuisine and steps of service, and potential to someday move into a serving or bartending role.

Flexible availability for weekends, weekdays, evenings, and holidays is required. We are looking for someone to join us with our busiest season of the year on the horizon. (Now through New Years.) Though we're busiest during the day, all staff are also expected to work some evening shifts. We are open and busy on and around all holidays, therefore time off on or around holidays is unlikely.

Please respond with your resume and include a brief statement about why you would like to be part of the Russ & Daughters family. Please do not include photos.

Russ & Daughters Cafe opened in 2014, on the 100th anniversary of Russ & Daughters -- the world-famous appetizing store and New York City institution. After a century in which generations of customers patiently waited in line at the store; it was time to give everyone a place to sit down.

Developed, owned, and led by Josh Russ Tupper and Niki Russ Federman, the 4th generation of the Russ family, the Russ & Daughters Cafe takes the appetizing classics for which Russ & Daughters is famous and presents them in a beautiful setting that evokes Russ & Daughters' timeless appeal, history, and haimishness. "Haimish" is a Yiddish word that suggests warmth, comfort, authenticity, conviviality, and lack of pretense. Haimishness is the essence of the Russ & Daughters experience.

At Russ & Daughters Cafe, expert smoked salmon slicers work their craft in front of guests; an open kitchen provides an over-the-counter connection like one feels in the store; a soda fountain bar beckons with homemade sodas, egg creams, shrubs, and superb cocktails; friendly staff proudly wear the iconic white Russ & Daughters lab coats; and 105 years of living history permeates throughout the entire space.

The timeless appeal of the Russ & Daughters Cafe makes it a perfect spot any time of day: whether it's for a light nosh, brunch, lunch, cocktails, dinner, or a special occasion. You will be part of the mishpocha (family) -- whether you have been a regular in the shop for 70 years or if you are a first time visitor.
