Who we are:

Emma’s Torch is a non-profit social enterprise that empowers refugees through culinary education. Based in Brooklyn, we operate a restaurant in Carroll Gardens, a growing catering business, and a cafe at the Brooklyn Public Library. More information can be found at 

The Position:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and passionate Operations Director to join our team. This role would report directly to the Executive Director and be responsible for the business and financial health of the Emma’s Torch revenue generating operations. This includes the restaurant in Carroll Gardens, Emma’s Torch @BPL, and Emma’s Torch Catering. The Operations Director will ensure that our guests are welcomed and delighted throughout their interaction with Emma’s Torch, and will support our back of house and front of house teams to achieve this goal.The Operations Director would strive to ensure that the business arms of Emma’s Torch are as profitable as possible, while maintaining our commitment to our students, our guests, and our community. This is an opportunity to grow with the organization while supporting an important social miss.

The Operation Director’s role include but are not limited to:

  • Front of house management across businesses:
    • Hire and train high-performance team
    • Responsible for scheduling and labor management (managers, front and back of house staff)
    • Clearly communicate goals and expectations to direct reports
    • Share positive and constructive feedback and create a culture of feedback as conduit for excellence; deliver reviews to employees as per plan
    • Organize staff development and educational activities
    • Maintain excellence of beverage program, creation of cocktails, wine and beverage offerings
    • Responsible for facilities management
  • Supporting students:
    • Work with Program Director on integrating students into FOH operations at both locations
    • Mentor students who are passionate about front of house service 
  • Human Resources:
    • Drive compliance with wage, hour and employee matters
    • Manage onboarding of all new hires and students
    • Responsible for employee compliance and ongoing government reporting 
    • Oversight of payroll operations in conjunction with organization’s payroll provider
    • Addresses employee relations issues to resolution; escalating to experts as necessary
  • Marketing and Guest relations:
    • Ensure each guest has a positive and meaningful experience
    • Oversee reservation systems
    • Reach new guests and donors by marketing Emma’s Torch brick and mortar
    • Assure excellence in all restaurant collateral including menus, signage, etc
    • Responsible for building business through regular generation, beneficial word of mouth, excellence in service and hospitality and marketing organization
  • Create and maintain management systems:
    • Accountable for excellent systems and processes in all facets of the operation
    • Responsible for creation of purchasing and inventory systems
    • Drive forecasting and budgeting for restaurant, café and catering
    • Responsible for management of all COGS, payroll and expenses to assure adherence to budgeted spend; demonstrates ability to flex with changes in business volume
    • Develop relationships with vendors 
    • Collaborate with back of house on menu costing and roll out
  • Catering and special events:
    • Work with Executive Director on catering sales
    • Create and manage workflow associated with sales and execution of events 
    • Maintain and grow relationships with catering venues
    • Manage and execute catering events including buyouts, drop-offs, and offsite catering
    • Work with Culinary Director on catering menus and coordinating tastings 
    • Maintain marketing materials, pricing packages and sample menus for use in sales process

Emma’s Torch is a non-profit social enterprise that trains and empowers refugees in the culinary arts. By investing in our refugees’ potential, we prepare our students for successful employment in an industry in which their culinary heritage can be celebrated. Emma’s Torch is named for Emma Lazarus, poet of the Statue of Liberty and a staunch advocate for refugee rights.

We offer two programs: a culinary and an ESL program. Students can participate in one or both.

Refugees in our 100-hour culinary program:
• Receive technical culinary training and licensing
• Get individual attention since each cohort is comprised of two students and one instructor
• Gain work experience at the Emma’s Torch Classroom Café
• Apply and land jobs in the culinary industry
• Are connected with a welcoming, supportive community as they adjust to life in the U.S.

Refugees in our ESL program:
• Learn English tailored to the culinary industry
• Practice with a small cohort of ten students
• Are connected with a welcoming, supportive community as they adjust to life in the U.S.

We also collaborate with some of New York’s most renowned chefs, industry leaders, and restaurant groups to facilitate employment opportunities for our students after graduation.
